Rare Scarlet Lightning Captured in Skies

A team of photography enthusiasts in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of crimson flashes, counted as the rarest celestial events on Earth, during which bright red bursts appear in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers began their evening to shoot the night sky over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on 11 October, before encountering the unusual spectacle.

They thought they would be lucky to get good weather that after-dark period, but their shooting session transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer stated.

Upon examining his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had recorded red sprites,” he noted. “We just could not believe it – we experienced joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are atmospheric energy releases in the mesosphere, caused by storm systems. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the surface, the phenomena propel upward towards the higher altitudes, producing structures that are similar to pillars, root vegetables or even jellyfish. The initial image of a this phenomenon was recorded – unintentionally – in that year, by a research unit at the a academic organization.

Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but a team member had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing right at an occurrence when it occurred – an ideal happenstance observing the right part of the firmament and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.

Seeing the phenomena was a dream for the photographer, an honored dark sky artist. “It seems that you are observing an unreal vision, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to see.”

Skill-Based and Creative Mastery

Recording a this phenomenon demands a proficiency with technical photography, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and artistic vision, he said. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

Another photographer remarked it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his life. “I was able to observe the Milky Way illuminating above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of light moved above a storm far on the horizon,” he explained.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs capturing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in the same photograph.

“It was one of those moments when you realize you are seeing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
