The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World

The winter content update for Minecraft has landed — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the title since the mace made its debut. The spear is finally here and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces several new features and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the development team had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.

"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," explained a senior product manager. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also looked good for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your allies on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead adds. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] perfect for knightly combat."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and going out and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she hints.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it should be made an Olympic sport right away.

Another major addition in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no necessity to surface for oxygen.

The remaining new features are primarily things that seek your demise, as is the nature of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've long considered this challenge periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also unveil something for the ocean depths," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for sea mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also points out that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

All told, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone — and the potential for chaos — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
