The US Firm's Driverless Taxis Planned for London Roads Starting 2026.
American company Waymo has declared that its self-driving vehicles will be on offer for booking on London's thoroughfares starting next year.
UK Capital Named as First European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.
London will become the pioneering European city to host an driverless taxi service, similar to those currently in use in San Francisco and four other American cities employing Waymo's innovative platform.
Initial Testing Phase to Begin with Trained Operators.
Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are presently traveling to London and will begin navigating on the city's roads in the near future with safety drivers supervising the vehicles.
Waymo – originally formed as a spin-off from the tech giant's autonomous vehicle project and belonging to the larger corporate umbrella – indicated it would scale up operations and work closely with the government transport body and Transport for London to acquire the required licenses to provide completely driverless services by 2026.
Growing Involvement in Self-Driving Transport Across London.
Other organizations, such as Uber and the British tech company Wayve, have likewise revealed their own strategies to trial driverless vehicles in the capital next year.
This follows the government officials confirming it would fast-track guidelines enabling real-world tests to proceed before regulation allowing autonomous cars passes in full.

Complete Introduction Expected After New Legislation Takes Effect.
A more extensive introduction of driverless vehicles is expected in the UK after the Automated Vehicles Act comes completely into force in 2027.
Waymo's Current Presence in the United Kingdom and Beyond.
Waymo already has connections to the UK after establishing its inaugural European technical center in Oxford in 2019.
It is also launching services in Tokyo using JLR EVs, marking its only other present operation beyond the US.
“We've demonstrated how to responsibly scale completely driverless taxi services, and we look forward to extend the benefits of our technology to the UK,” remarked the company executive, adding that the technology was “enhancing transport security and travel more accessible”.

Waymo began its autonomous cabs in 2020 and currently states it has carried over a vast number of riders in the United States.
Regardless of some troubling occurrences, Waymo asserted that statistics showed that cars operated by humans were linked to accidents that harmed walkers significantly more frequently than its driverless vehicles.
